Youth Leadership & Empowerment
Filipinos Reaching for Education & Empowerment (F.R.E.E.)
Through our F.R.E.E. program, we develop and support the leadership of Filipino high school youth in Carson and Long Beach to organize for positive social change in their schools and communities. They receive educational resources, mentorship and skill-building trainings, participate in cultural activities such as theater, visual art, creative writing, photo/video documentation, and dance. Youth engage in community campaigns that seek to address issues around the state of public education, access to higher & relevant education, and access to resources for immigrant students.
Who can join the Sama Sama Summer Workshops?
These are aimed towards youth from 13-24 years old. If you are interested in learning and meeting new people, you can join the workshops.
What are we going to learn?
We will learn how to tell stories through theater, arts, music, and dance. We will participate in fun activities that will help you feel more comfortable in performing. We will also have field trips and other team building activities to get to know each other and our community better.
How much do I have to pay?
All the workshops are free to participants. All we need from you is your commitment to learning new skills and meeting new people. Bring your friends too!
What else can I get out of it?
If you are a high school student needing to complete your community service hours, participating in the workshop can help you.
Our Voices: Youth Perspectives
In Summer 2015, youth from Carson and Long Beach came together to talk about their experiences as a young Filipino in their respective communities. They shared about what they like about being young, as well as their issues and concerns.
“Kabataan Unite” Leadership Cohort
In Spring 2018, the Filipino Migrant Center and Kabataan Alliance held a four week youth leadership training series called "Kabataan Unite". The Filipino youth participants included high school students from Cabrillo, Carson, and Long Beach Poly, as well as college students from Long Beach City College, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Cal State Long Beach.
